Football Handicap Betting: A Guide to -1 and +1

Learn how football handicaps work, what -1 and +1 mean, how whole- and half-goal lines settle, and how handicaps differ from the match result.

Football handicap betting adjusts a team's starting position by adding or subtracting goals for the purpose of settling a bet. It gives you a way to consider the expected margin between teams, rather than focusing only on whether a team wins, draws or loses.

The exact settlement depends on the market type. In particular, check whether a whole-goal line is an Asian handicap, where a draw against the handicap can mean a refund, or a three-way handicap, which includes a separate adjusted-draw outcome.

What -1 and +1 mean in football

A team on -1 starts with one goal taken away from its actual score for the handicap calculation. It therefore needs to win by more than one goal for a -1 handicap to count as a win in an Asian handicap market. A team on +1 has one goal added to its score for that calculation, giving it a cushion against defeat.

For a hypothetical example, if a team plays on -1 and wins 2-0, its adjusted score is 1-0, so the handicap bet wins. If it wins 1-0, the adjusted scores are level. On an Asian handicap, that exact result is a push and the stake is returned. If the team draws or loses, the -1 bet loses.

With +1, a hypothetical team that loses 1-0 is level after the adjustment, so an Asian handicap bet is refunded. If it wins or draws, the adjusted result is in its favour; if it loses by two or more goals, the bet loses.

How whole-goal handicap lines settle

Whole-goal lines such as -1 or +1 can produce an adjusted draw. In an Asian handicap market, this is called a push: the selection neither wins nor loses, and the stake is returned. The same principle applies to other whole-goal lines when the final score lands exactly on the adjusted line.

Do not assume every handicap market uses that settlement. In a three-way handicap market, the adjusted draw is a distinct result that can be selected, rather than a push that returns the stake. Check the market description and rules before placing a bet, because the same handicap number can be offered in different formats.

How half-goal handicap lines settle

A half-goal line, such as -0.5 or +1.5, cannot finish level after the handicap is applied. There is no push on these lines: the selection either wins or loses. A -0.5 handicap requires the team to win the match, while a +1.5 handicap wins if the team wins, draws or loses by no more than one goal.

For a hypothetical -1.5 example, a team must win by at least two goals for the handicap selection to win. A one-goal victory is not enough, and the stake is not returned. The decimal part of the line is what removes the possibility of an exact adjusted draw.

When a handicap may suit the question better

The match result market asks whether a team will win, draw or lose, without considering the margin of victory. A handicap can be more relevant when your view is about how comfortably a team might win, or whether an underdog can keep the score close, rather than simply which side will avoid defeat.

That added detail also changes the risk: a team can win the match but fail to cover a negative handicap, or lose and still cover a positive one. Compare the handicap terms with the match-result market and make sure the settlement matches what you intend to assess. Betting involves risk, and no market removes uncertainty.
